You are not what you do.

Why midlife crisis is a crisis of identity and how a man's roles differ from who he is.

Greetings,

Let me ask you a question.

Who are you?

Not your name. Not your job title. Not your role as a father, husband, or provider. Strip all of that away — who are you?

Most men struggle with that question. Not because the answer is complicated. Because somewhere along the way, the roles took over. The job became the identity. The title became the man. And nobody stopped to question whether that was actually true.

And so we build. We achieve. We accumulate. We perform. And still, underneath all of it, the question remains — am I enough?

That unresolved question is where a lot of what we call midlife crisis actually lives. It isn’t a crisis of achievement. It’s a crisis of identity. A man reaches a certain point, looks around at everything he’s built, and realises it still hasn’t answered the question he’s been carrying his whole life.

Because it was never going to. The role was never designed to carry that weight.

“The man who knows the difference between his identity and his assignment is a far freer man than the one who doesn’t.”

Here is what I’ve come to believe — and I want to be clear about this: the kind of identity I’m speaking of is not available to everyone by default. It is only found by those who have truly surrendered their lives and placed their faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Not those who simply believe in God in a general sense, but those who have genuinely put their lives under His Lordship.

For those men, Scripture offers something the world cannot. An identity that does not shift with your circumstances, your title, or your failures. One that holds even when everything else shakes.

Your roles — father, husband, provider, protector — those are assignments. God-given, important, worth taking seriously. But they are not who you are.

The man who knows the difference between his identity and his assignment is a far freer man than the one who doesn’t.

Who does God say you are — and have you built your life on that answer?

Grace and peace, Seun
